“A husband’s obsessive desire for a child leads to an unexpected manifestation of his yearning in a nightmarish short story about fatherhood dreams by New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill.
Willy and Marianne’s farmhouse in Maine has acres of meadow and fresh air, and a lonesome bridle path in the forest along which Willy daydreams and ambles. When he’s loaned a decrepit old baby stroller to cart his groceries home, the rickety squeak of the wheels comforts him. So do the sweet coos of a baby Willy knows can’t be real. Can it? In this twisted thicket, wishes come true—with a price.
Joe Hill’s The Pram is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind. They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting.”
Joe Hill has wowed the world with everything from iconic graphic novels like Locke & Key to epic apocalyptic thrillers like The Fireman, but his greatest gift to the world might just be his plethora of unforgettable short stories. From strange to magical to heartbreaking, Hill's stories run the gamut of storytelling, and although they often have their differences, the one thing they always have in common is their ability to entertain. Never once have I finished a Joe Hill story and thought, that one was just okay. Each and every one is genuinely fantastic. So when I say The Pram is his best story yet, please understand what that really means to me.
Parenthood is a subject rife with horrific potential, and Hill explores the theme masterfully in this story. As usual, I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that some authors are terrific at building physical atmosphere, and Hill does that here as well, but he goes far beyond that by building the emotional atmosphere. I walked away from The Pram feeling some kind of combination of excited, terrified, and totally wrecked, and I don't know what more you could ask of a story.
If you like Joe Hill, creature features, supernatural stories of parenthood, or just great storytelling, you don't want to miss this one.
